Yes... that's really what it looks like.
And yes... everyone laughs the first time they see one.
Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of the geoduck (pronounced "gooey-duck"), one of the strangest—and most iconic—creatures you'll ever discover along Washington's coastline.
Despite its appearance, the geoduck is actually the world's largest burrowing clam. While its shell may only be about the size of a dinner plate, the long siphon extending from the shell can grow well over two feet long. Some geoducks can weigh more than seven pounds and live well over 100 years, making them among the longest-lived animals in Washington's coastal waters.
Finding one isn't as simple as walking the beach.
Geoducks live buried deep beneath the sand and only become accessible during some of the year's lowest tides. When those extreme tides roll out, you'll often see people carrying shovels and clam guns, hoping to uncover one of these legendary shellfish before the tide returns.
Even if you never plan to harvest one, watching experienced diggers at work is a uniquely Washington experience—and one that always attracts curious spectators.
For riders, a geoduck hunt makes a perfect excuse to point the front wheel toward the coast. Ride the winding shoreline highways, stop for fresh seafood, explore the tide flats, and discover yet another reason why Washington is unlike anywhere else in America.

🦪 Planning to look for geoducks?
Extreme low tides occur only a handful of times each year. Always check current tide tables, beach openings, shellfish regulations, and marine biotoxin advisories before heading out. Many beaches require a valid Washington shellfish license if you intend to harvest, and not every beach is open every day.
