Though the locomotives fell silent and the tracks were eventually lifted, their legacy did not disappear. Much of today's Mountain Loop Highway follows that very same railroad grade, allowing modern riders to trace the path of steam engines through forests, river valleys, and forgotten settlements. Long before the Mountain Loop Highway became one of Washington's great motorcycle roads, this community earned its living from timber, railroads, and the promise of the mines beyond the mountains. The tavern's name honors the towering spar trees that once stood above the surrounding forests—great Douglas firs transformed into wooden cranes that lifted giant logs from the wilderness, symbols of the grit and ingenuity that built this valley. Today the loggers have given way to motorcyclists, but the tradition of gathering before a journey remains unchanged. Engines rumble where steam whistles once echoed, friends meet over coffee or a meal, and stories begin long before the first curve.
