The Leavenworth Run is one of the most popular motorcycle rides in Washington State, connecting the west side to the eastern Cascades through mountain passes, river valleys, historic railroad country, and some of the best sweepers in the state.
For many riders, this isn’t just a destination ride—it’s a ritual.
These rider notes were built directly from real-world input from Washington riders who’ve spent years riding this route in every condition imaginable.
This isn’t brochure advice. It’s rider intelligence.
⚠️ Hazards & Road Conditions
Rough pavement west of Stevens Pass
Several riders warned about rough pavement, bumps, and uneven surfaces on the west side approach to Stevens Pass.
“Hiway 2 on the west side is a rough ride… be aware of the humps and bumps before Steven’s Pass.” — Mark Overman
Traffic can become the real danger
Traffic—not corners—is often the biggest issue on this ride.
The Sultan corridor and westbound Highway 2 can become heavily congested, especially:
Friday afternoons
Sunday westbound traffic
Holiday weekends
“Avoid westbound on Sunday afternoons. At all costs….” — Steven M. Green
“I live in Sultan and the stop-and-go traffic doesn’t make for a pleasant ride.” — Jeanine Koehler
GMRW Rider Tip
If possible:
Ride early
Avoid westbound Sunday afternoons
Know your bailout routes before Sultan
🚓 Enforcement
Sultan → Index speed enforcement
This section received repeated warnings from riders.
“Best advice I can give is: Be sure to do the speed limit from Sultan to Index.” — Izaak Erickson
Small mountain towns and tourist corridors can also see heavier enforcement during busy weekends and events.
🌄 Recommended Route Variations
⭐ Chumstick Highway (Highly Recommended)
Without question, the strongest repeated recommendation from riders was: 👉 Do NOT just ride Highway 2 straight through.
Many riders strongly recommended looping through:
Plain
Chumstick Highway
Coles Corner
The Chumstick route was repeatedly described as:
More scenic
More technical
Better twisties
Less traffic
More enjoyable overall
“Head through Plain and hit the Chumstick into Leavenworth rather than take 2 the whole way.” — Earl Abbe
“The twisties on the hill are worth the ride if there's no traffic!” — Brian Pyeatt
“The Chumstick side route is highly recommended.” — Rob Parker
🏍️ Three Pass Loop (Long Route Option)
For riders wanting a full-day loop:
“Do a three pass from Yakima and return… over Snoqualmie, Stevens, and Blewett and back to Yakima.” — Gary Conn
Approximate distance:
300+ miles
🛻 ADV / Dual Sport Option
“Ride through Plain, then up Eagle Creek—it’s a good smooth road (dirt).” — Sfc Bitter
A worthwhile stop for riders interested in the railroad history that shaped the entire corridor through the Cascades.
⛽ Fuel, Parking & Logistics
Ethanol-Free Fuel
“The Chevron at the east end of Sultan has ethanol-free gas in the back.” — Mike Graeber
Leavenworth Parking Tip
Weekend parking in Leavenworth can become difficult, especially for groups.
“Parking in Leavenworth can be a challenge for group rides on the weekends.” — Jim Williams
GMRW Rider Tip
Parking behind Kristall’s Restaurant & Lounge is often easier than fighting for downtown parking.
Westbound Return Stop
“The rest stop just west of Coles Corner on Hwy 2… I stop there every time, especially going west.” — Ken Anderson
🧠 Final Rider Wisdom
The biggest lesson repeated by riders?
👉 The best version of this ride usually happens:
Early in the day
Outside peak tourist traffic
Using side routes
Taking your time
And perhaps most importantly…
“Leavenworth may be the excuse for the ride.
But the road is the reason.”
